I loved this week in class! I was excited to take this course because I believe the art of letter writting is so beautiful, genuine, and should be kept in our culture. Diving in deeper and looking at other people’s letters has broadened my ideas and vision on letter writting, and has brought it to a whole new level…! My group is getting the honor of researching and learning about Wilmer Cressman, a Muhlenberg graduate (’43) who went on the serve in WWII! I have already learned so much about him, his wife mildred, where he’s been stationed, that his best friend is John, and so much more. Getting deeper, with these letters I can feel his soul and understand his personality; he seems very genuine, with an appreciative heart, and a funny personality, who likes to crack jokes every so often. Just holding the physical letters alone was so powerful and had an impact on me. Gripping real documents and forms of communication from 80 years ago was such a profound moment! I had such a great time just feeling the paper, and admiring the typewriting ink and black and white images. I love what we are doing so far in this class and I can’t wait to continue on learning about Muhlenberg alumni who have served in the war… especially Cressman!
